Out of the Rough

Monthly newsletter of the Queanbeyan Golf Club

March 2019

President's Message

Dear fellow members, what a whirlwind time it has been these past few weeks! The success of the 2019 Worrells NSW Open at our club was beyond what I ever imagined, even though I have never had any doubt as to the pride and capabilities of our membership. To all involved in the lead up and over the event itself, a huge thankyou for your commitment. You have excelled and these efforts have put our club on the map as a destination for both golf and as a social outlet where you are really looked after.

Following the event, the debriefs and analysis are ongoing within Management and your Board. This is to ensure that as opportunities arise in the future, we are even more prepared to present a quality service.

The most pleasing news I’ve heard since the wrap up of the event is that our crews of volunteer members are keen to forge on with various weekly tasks around the course. This is a huge benefit for us all and although we cannot all assist, due to work or other commitments, we can all pass on a thanks here and there to those people as you see them. Of course the best way of thanking them for their work is by ensuring we all do our best every time we play to remediate the course as best we can (repairing divots and pitch marks, sticking to the paths as much as possible etc.).

In a few weeks time we have our Pro-Am event and this is another opportunity to showcase our course to elite players and visitors from other clubs. Please pay attention to Jakes contribution in this newsletter and other notices over the next few weeks for details as to how you can participate and perhaps bring some friends, colleagues to play as well.

Until next month, best wishes

All the best

Adrian (Colesy)

The Captain's Desk

It has been hard to get back to normal after the wonderful NSW Women’s Open, great play and even greater volunteer helpers.

Pennant   For our A Grade team, unfortunately the game on Sunday 17 march was the last round for the team this year. Thank you to all players and hopefully 2020 will have a better result. A Reserve will play next Sunday in quarter final against top of division Royal Canberra with the games teeing off at Royal Canberra from 12.50.

Handicap team recorded an encouraging win on Sunday and will travel to Murrumbidgee next Sunday to play against Gungahlin Lakes in their last round. Thank you to all team members and better luck next year.

Juniors still have three rounds to play before finals begin in May. Team at top of ladder and hopefully will stay there.
Masters Scratch with three rounds to play the team will need very strong wins to be in finals. Masters Handicap also with two rounds to play, are sitting in a better position, first by the closest of margins. Play well against RMC and Yowani and we will have another team in the finals.

4BBB Matchplay    Top eight pairings will compete in match rounds that will begin next Saturday. The players with the best qualifying score were Mark Brunello and Nicholas Whennan with 43 and last placing was 41 points and had to be decided on count back.

Brighton Lakes will visit on Saturday and Sunday 30/31 March and will bring 23 players to compete against our players. A great weekend for all players and a team win to us will make it even better.

Reminders for April
Pro Am – Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 April – need to check details with Jake
Final Handiskins -  Saturday 13 April
Easter Saturday – Australian 3 Person Ambrose – check Notice Board for entry details
Maximum score Stroke – Sunday 28 April – for those who would like to play stroke but avoid playing because of the fear of an extremely bad hole.

CEO Update

Hello again members.

Well …. What a month! Phew!!!

Brand new clubhouse. Golf course in mint condition. Fantastic Women’s NSW Open tournament.

To everyone who contributed to the success of the NSW Open (in a big way, or small), thank you very much. The sense of comradeship amongst the many volunteers who pulled everything together, is palpable. And long should it remain!

Elsewhere within our newsletter, there will be many, many references to the outstanding efforts of the “Green Army”, before, during and indeed after the tournament. Often easily overlooked during these times are the countless extra hours put in by the staff (mostly unpaid). It is with sincere, professional pride that I recognise and thank, the many staff who happily started work much earlier than normal, and worked back well after the timesheet had been put away! (You know who you are, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart)

What has been forged over the past few months has been a great team. Employees, committee members, volunteers and contractors, have melded together to present the kind of amenity and service that all members should be very proud of.

Of particular note during the tournament, were the many commendations from the Europe-based competitors, of how accommodating, welcoming and friendly that the staff and volunteers around our club were (are). It comes as a source of immense pride when aspects of your club are being compared to the great golf clubs and tournaments of Europe.

We’ve certainly done what we set out to do, and that is put Queanbeyan GC well and truly in the upper echelons of golf in the region, and well beyond. It was a pleasure to be a part of, and members can expect bigger, better and brighter things to come of our club in the future.

Thanks again!

May the breeze be at your back, and every putt be your last!!!

Women's Captain

The Women's season began in February with the match between Captains v Presidents and a very close competition starting with match play on the Tuesday comp with the President’s team winning by 12.5 to 5.5. But  Saturday the Captains team was catching up fast with a closing gap  of just 1. The President's team winning 20/19.

Julie Meskell won the February Monthly Medal for Tuesday wit a score of 72 nett.  Liz Clark won the Saturday medal with 70 nett.  Well done to both of you.

Open days have begun and the first for the year was at Federal Golf Club.  Our very own Pauline Jeffery winning with a gross score of 81.  It doesn't stop there she also won the pot of gold (NTP) on the 16th worth a tidy $140 . Luckily for those who stayed around till the end we were able to celebrate her wins with a glass of champagne. Tracy Harwood won the Div 1 nett with 72.

Jacqui McMillan giving us a helpful tip to look up as well when looking for your ball.

Amber Thornton came 3rd in the Wagga Wagga Junior Masters . Her sister Chloe also doing well tying 5th and best for her Kennesaw state team event on 16-19 February.

Goulburn had their open day on 20 February, unfortunately no one from Queanbeyan shone that day.
CSGA had their opening day on 28 February at Belconnen Golf course where all the winners of championships and diabetes trophies compete against the district winners. Fran Miller won the Div 2 Champion of champions.

March and the countdown for the Women’s NSW Open was on and Amber competed in the ACTEWAGL Classic and the Women’s NSW Open.   What an experience to compete against all those international professionals.  I know we are very proud of her.
Our course performed very well thanks to the huge efforts to the ground staff and the many volunteers. You did an amazing job in such a short space of time.

Fairbairn had their open day on 14 March and Deb Baker was runner up in the Gross.  Well done.

March monthly medals were won by Sam McLintock on Saturday with a 70 nett and Fiona Doyle for the Tuesday with 68 nett.  Watch out for these 2 they are on the move.

The years pennant has begun with Plate losing to Moss Vale at Moss Vale 4/1; Bronze squared their match playing Federal; Bruce won 5/0 against Federal.

New Golf Rules - Effective 1 January 2019

All new bunkers are in play and there have been some experiences so far.  See below the rules for bunker relief.

Rule 19.3 – Page 119 Relief Options for Unplayable Ball in Bunker
1) For one penalty stroke, the player may take stroke-and-distance relief.
2) For one penalty stroke, the player may take back-on-the-line relief in the bunker.
3) For one penalty stroke, the player may take lateral relief in the bunker.
4) For a total of two penalty strokes, the player may take back-on-the-line relief outside the bunker based on a reference line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball.

Local Rule Players are reminded that Queanbeyan has not adopted the 2019 Model Local Rule E5 that provides an alternative to Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Ball Out of Bounds.

Superintendent's Report

Thanks again to our devoted groups of volunteers, men and women, who together with the Course Staff made the NSW Women's Open a success. I was particularly pleased with the feedback from the players and Golf NSW about the state and playability of the course.

By now most of you will have seen the "Black Cats" patrolling the greens. They have gone someway to minimising the damage done to the greens by the birds. Thanks to Wolf for building the cats.  If you are out playing and you see the birds on the greens please feel free to "shoo" them.

I think you will agree with me that the new bunkers are great and the re-shaping, drainage and sand consistency has improved the standard of our bunkers immensely.

With Autumn now upon us and Winter not to far away let's hope we have a damp winter to bed the new turf in around the bunkers.

Junior News

A week of professional golf played at Queanbeyan Golf Club was a real eye opener for everyone, in particular watching the women pro golfers warm up on the driving range. With all different countries representing from around the world the conversations had about their travels, experiences, winning tournaments and the friendships made at each competition were captivating. On display were the new advancements in training aids and players face timing their coaches for instructions on their play which highlighted the dedication needed to play golf at a professional level.

Divot Boxes

With the new divot boxes on Holes 5, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 17 please make sure you keep the lid closed after use as this stops the seed from germinating inside the box.

If you are playing with someone and they take a divot and don’t fix it, Can you either fix the divot with the sand and seed mix or nicely suggest that they do so.

Tee Times

Unfortunately, we are not getting better at these cancellations and they are becoming more of an "on the morning" or an hour before tee off times. Be fair to your fellow members. If you are unable to play, please delete your name as early as possible.

Junior Clinics

The 1st clinic for 2019 was held on the 6th of February 2019

Cost: $10 per clinic
How to book: Just call the pro shop on 6297 2542 on the morning to confirm you child's attendance.

Hoops and Ropes

If you see hoops or ropes down it would be appreciated if you could take the time to put them back to protect these areas.
It would be great if and when you need to move a rope, hoop or sign that you replace it to its original position.

The Greens staff place these hoops, ropes and signs periodically around the course to protect new work and regenerate worn areas.

2019 NSW Women's Open Wrap-Up

Hi All,

NSW Womens Golf Tournament – Volunteer Update

The NSW Womens Golf Tournament has come and gone, by all accounts a resounding success.

This success was in no small part due to the volunteers that supported the event.

To have over 160 volunteers from our small membership base support the event and players was truly amazing……….a credit to all involved.

I could not be more proud to be a Queanbeyan Club member with the interaction of all involved and willingness to help with roles / duties either by arriving early to help out and / or staying around after their shift to see what else needed to be done.

Whilst we all can feel proud of our efforts there are a small band of people I would like to personally thank. These members were asked to Manage certain roles / volunteers and all were superb in their respective area of need.

Jerry Smith – Practice Facility

Mick Bowden – Drink and food distribution

Des Byrne – Marshals / Hole Spotters

Scott Cameron / Gill Maiden – VIP Area

Julie Meskell – Players’ Lounge

Wendy Lynch – Billets

Dom DiCampli / Peter Solway – Caddies

Deb Baker – 3 Hole Scorers

Melissa Coles – Players’ Lounge and Volunteers Food preparation

Whilst it is always difficult to single out one particular person when there are so many fantastic contributors, there is a need to do this.

Liz Clarke was responsible to put together the data base of volunteers, the spreadsheet detailing roles / responsibilities and the daily schedule. When you have 160 plus volunteers and trying to accommodate their individual needs / requests around availability etc, Liz was superb in her diligence and efforts to have this information available to all. As a direct result of Liz’s work the Tournament was seen as a foundation for what Queanbeyan Golf Club can produce and her legacy will form what we can produce for future tournaments. Well done Liz.

I made a comment at the conclusion of the event;

“Whilst I have been a member of the club for 12 plus years and profess to know a number of members, as a result of the tournament, I know a hell of a lot more members now post tournament and can honestly say we have moved a long way to creating ONE Club, moving away from the us and them mentality that sometime exists”

Once again a huge thankyou to all involved.

Ray Dorsett
